Signs That it’s Time to Change Wipers

It’s pretty clear (or not so, rather) when your wipers are beginning to reach their end of lifespan. A telltale sign, of course, is leftover water where wipers would normally cover. If you notice cracked or separated rubber on the blade, a screeching noise when wipers are operating, or even scratches to your windshield glass, then it’s definitely time to change wipers!

How Much Does it Cost to Change Wipers?

Windshield wipers are typically inexpensive to replace, whether you choose to do it yourself or to have a shop do it for you. The wiper blades themselves typically cost between $20 and $45, and can be found at most auto parts stores, including our Parts Center!

How to Change Windshield Wipers Yourself

If you choose to go the DIY method to change wipers, here’s the basics of what to do:

1. Position wipers upright.
2. Pull wipers away from the windshield.
3. Read the instructions on your windshield wiper’s packaging for how to remove them. You’ll either have to depress a tab to pull it off or slide it off with the wiper arm.
4. Clean your windshield thoroughly to prevent dust and dirt from getting on your new windshield wipers.
5. Install the new windshield wipers by doing the reverse of steps two and three.
6. Carefully return your windshield wipers back in their regular position.
