How to Get the Best Gas Mileage Out of Your Acura

2018 Acura MDX Driving

Spending money on gas is a necessary part of vehicle ownership, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to keep your vehicle running in Red Bank. Whether you drive an Acura MDX or Acura ILX, we have plenty of tips on how to get the gas mileage out of your Acura.

Improved Acura Gas Mileage Tips

  1. Be Light on Your Feet

If you have a need for speed when you drive around Freehold, easing up on the gas pedal and driving at a moderate speed is better for gas mileage. Every 10 miles per hour you go above 55 mph causes up to a 15% drop in gas mileage. Obey speed signs to avoid a ticket, while saving money at the gas pump.

  1. Watch Your Weight

A spacious interior and advanced technology are great features, but when your vehicle is weighed down, it requires more power to go. The more power you use, the more fuel you burn. If your trunk is regularly filled with heavier cargo like golf clubs, musical instruments, or sports gear, it could be affecting your gas mileage. Consider removing these items when they’re not needed.

  1. Don’t be a Drag

When you strap items like luggage, bikes, or skis to the roof of your Acura, it creates heightened aerodynamic drag, which gives you less miles per gallon. If they’re not needed, be you can remove these items from your roof to reduce drag and improve gas mileage.

  1. Check Your Tires

Your tires’ condition affects your gas mileage as much as they affect performance and safety when driving. Due to the added energy required to produce forward motion, under-inflated and balding tires can cause a drop in fuel economy of up to 1.3 miles per gallon. Not only that, but they also compromise your vehicle handling and ability to brake properly, and could increase your risk of a flat tire. Be sure to check your tire pressure and tire treads frequently to find out if you need a tire rotation or a new set installed at your dealer’s service department.

  1. Don’t be Idle

Sitting idle on Asbury Park roads with the engine running for long periods of time burns fuel without going anywhere, which causes a decrease in your fuel economy. If you have to sit in your vehicle for a longer period of time, for example if you are waiting to pick someone up, waiting for a freight train to pass, or at a dead stop in traffic, be sure to turn off the engine.
