When To Change Your Oil

Not long ago, technicians and mechanics would tell you that your vehicle would need its oil swapped out at 3,000 miles or after three months, when you bring your car in for routine car maintenance. By today’s standards, this is outdated advice on how to stay prepared on the road. Recent studies combined with advancements in engineering now advise owners that their vehicles can extend the life of their oil closer to 5,000 miles.

Keep in mind, however, that this number can shift in either direction depending on your particular vehicle. Double check with your Ocean Acura service center and read through your owner’s manual to get the best information for your specific vehicle.

Are Oil Changes That Important?

The short answer is: yes. Inside your engine, there is constant friction occurring in which the pistons and inner walls of the housing contact one another on occasion. Oil acts as a protective lubricant by limiting the amount of friction between these two, extending engine life and boosting performance. Delaying an oil change can cause several problems as issues like low oil or debris filled oil can lead to overheated engines, among other things. Besides sharply affecting vehicle performance, this also endangers you and your passengers. Especially when the winter weather arrives, oil changes are an important step to making sure your car is prepared for winter.

Can I Change My Own Oil?

Of course! Just remember, if you decide to do this service by yourself there a numerous steps to the process. Follow these, double check your references, and take your time:

  1. Choosing the right kind of oil
  2. Preparing supplies and vehicle
  3. Draining oil from the drain plug
  4. Tightening the drain plug
  5. Changing the oil filter
  6. Adding new oil
  7. Making sure the oil level is right
